I came to the conclusion that the Italians fundamentalist stance - TopicsExpress

I came to the conclusion that the Italians fundamentalist stance about coffee is, at least to same extent, based upon the language (and entrenched in it, in the sense that these causalities are often circular). I refer to the fact espresso coffee in Italy is simply called caffè... even cappuccino is not strictly considered a type of coffee! Its a bit as espresso were saying: You shall not have other coffee before me. Its a monotheistic culture, and we know that monotheism is always more prone to intolerance than polytheism (you can always make room for one more god). The cultural shock Italians face when they go abroad for the fist time is, mainly, conceptual: they need to preprogram their mind to the extend that coffee will need to become a genus instead of a species, so to speak. Some never achieve that, so even in front of the most delicious moka with cream you will hear the classical anathema: Only in Italy they know what coffee means!
