I can imagine the USAAF B-25’s may have experienced some strange incident that caused damage to their aircraft, but I don’t think they experienced something like this that really did happen to VMB 611. Collision damage to APS-3 radar, dubbed Hose Nose of PBJ-1D MB 4 at Emirau Island. While conducting a low-level strafing attack over New Ireland on February 17, 1945, MB 4 BuNo 35178 was struck by a “Flying Fox” (a large Fruit Bat). Although no one was injured in the incident, the impact of the animal destroyed the radome and the radar scanner. The PBJ immediately returned to base and the damage was repaired.
