I can see the underlying activity on Stonekettle Station. Among other things, I can see what people are looking at, how long they look at it, if they look at the comments, if they attempt to comment themselves, and how they leave the site (e.g. by closing the window or by following a link to another site), and so on. Certain patterns amuse me. Whenever I publish an article thats guaranteed to attract those who will vehemently disagree, such as the current post about Glenn Beck and his comments regarding Alaska and Tokyo Rose and revolution, I see a certain recurring pattern. People will come to the post via a link from another site, read part of the essay, jump to the comments, jump to the commenting rules, back to comments, back to commenting rules, back to the article, back to the rules, back to the comments, back the rules ... and then leave. A couple minutes later theyll be back. And theyll go through the same thing, essay, comments, rules, comments, rules, comments, rules. And then they leave without commenting. Sometimes they do this half a dozen times. This happens a lot. It amuses me. My commenting rules are simple, Dont be a dick. I find it hysterically funny that certain people wont comment if they cant be a dick about it. I wonder if this would work elsewhere? * Sign on entrance ramp to the highway: No bicycles, scooters, animal powered conveyances, or dicks... * Cell phones will not be sold to dicks... * Sign over the Congressional Rotunda: No dicks allowed. Therell probably be some debate over the silhouetted symbol that goes under the red circle/slash on the sign though.
