I can share this about Chicago and the suburbs ... in 1959 we moved from approximately 72nd & Exchange in Chicago on The South Side to Dolton, Illinois. It was mostly farmland back then. and that was cool ... I went to the same grammar school all my 8 years, even though we moved closer in a new home 8 years later, a brand new home my folks helped design. This was now South Holland just off 154th St. We were at Ellis and 154th St. We had many cultures within our community. My favorite, although we were Irish, were the Polish, because they had the best food! I was invited sometimes to Polish homes where Grandma & Grandpa and Mom & Dad & the kids all lived under one roof! The advantage ... culture ... and great FOOD! I would sit at the table as a guest and Dad was at one end & Grandpa at the other, but when we spoke, Mom would still be bringing in food from the kitchen & translating for us! So, it might take 2 minutes, but, then everyone laughed! hahaha ... still, great food!
