I cant believe its been 50 years! I remember November 22, 1963 so vividly. I was in Mrs. Kerrs class in Toronto (Willowdale) at Hollywood P.S. Mr. Dawson, the principal, made an announcement over the PA that President Kennedy had been shot and killed in Dallas. As an 8-year old, I remember visualizing President Kennedy in a western movie setting. Thats what Texas meant to me then. After school, my Mom was waiting in the car for us. That only happened when it was pouring rain and it was a nice day. There were lots of parents waiting in cars. My Mom was sobbing in the car. My brother and I got in and we drove home wordlessly while my Mom cried. For the next four days, we sat in front of the television (a black and white Viking in a large wooden console) and watched history unfold. I was watching live when Jack Ruby killed Oswald. We watched the Presidents body being transported to the airport, Mrs. Kennedy in a state of shock in her bloody suit. We watched every minute of the lying in state and the state funeral. Looking back, the experience was surreal, but very real at the same time. It really was a tragedy for a family, a nation, and the world.
