I cant do this anymore. Its too emotionally taxing for me, as Im already highly dependent on positive daily news and other input to maintain a healthy level of self-esteem and sense of purpose in the world. My only recourse is to disconnect, or risk plunging head-long into a serious bout of depression. Internally, is this how some of you feel also? Perhaps you arent comfortable admitting that the Gators struggles have such a profound effect of sadness upon you, so instead you become angry, and you express your feelings via complaints and demands of coaches and players being replaced? Its a common human instinct to preserve ones self-respect by expressing anger and blame upon others for a situation. The rejected lover lashes out at the object of his affection, the fired employee seeks to harm his former company, the embarrassed fan demands regime change in his teams hierarchy. The truth of this situation is that the Gators have deficiencies in areas, and they arent playing well. Is it coaching? Sometimes. Is it players? Yeah, we could have more appropriate people doing certain things. Is it also fans? You bet -- all the negativity swirling around the program cant be good for the psyches of 18-23-year-olds. However, the University of Florida is my alma mater, and I love being a Gator. I dont have the luxury changing affiliations or turning my back. But I CAN tune out to a degree, and attempt to decrease the importance of college football in my life, as a defense mechanism to avoid returning to the pits of anxiety and depression that Ive waded through in the past. Certainly, Ill continue to watch and follow the events of the season, but I cant allow myself to remain as emotionally invested as I have been thus far. Thanks for reading .
