I cant get the idea out of my head of owning a white Clio 197. I think they are a fantastic looking car. I currently own a MK1 Clio 16v which is the grandfather of the wide arch/sport clio, also an R5 GT Turbo and a Nissan 200sx. I drive the Clio 16v daily and its great, handles well, and i love how it looks. The gearboxes have always been a problem in high powered Clios, and the 16v is no exception. They always had issues with the diff circlip popping out under heavy load which eventually wrote off the gearbox. The later MK2 variants (Clio 172/182) had a bolted in diff which sorted the issue and I believe they have become pretty strong gearboxes now. But, all ive heard about the MK3 197 is that the gearboxes are the weak point yet again. They seem to be failing at an alarming rate. Have Renault gone backwards with their gearbox design? Ive seen a few that have been converted to megane turbo engine and gearbox, is that a better combo to go for? Finally, does anyone have a 197 near Loughborough that fancies taking me for a spin and letting me have a look around, and possibly even a drive? Ive seen the Clio 200 but im really not keen on the front end.
