I cant stop thinking about a homeless man I met at lunch today. He was in his mid 60s probably, holes in his shoes, thin ripped up coat, no gloves, dirty face & beard. As I was walking to Potbelly for a sandwich he asked if I could spare a quarter. It was all he needed to have enough for a coffee he said. He didnt ask for a dollar or $5 - just what he needed, a quarter. I didnt have cash on me so I told him Id buy him a sandwich and a drink with my debit card. He said nobody has ever done anything so nice for him. When I gave him his lunch he started talking about how cold it was out & he told me that he was a Vietnam vet & how hed like to get off the streets but has no I.D. no SS card no license - nothing. Then he said it was too cold for him to be wasting my time with small talk & urged me to get back inside my work bldg where I could get warm. He seemed thrilled that someone took the time to acknowledge his existence. I hope I see him again, Id like to find out if I can help him somehow....even if its just shoes & a warm coat & gloves.
