I cant tell you how much I support the Keystone XL - TopicsExpress

I cant tell you how much I support the Keystone XL pipeline. First of all, its gonna piss off a bunch of over-educated tree-hugging liberal greenies, and its fun pissing off those wimps. But more importantly, getting Canadian oil to the Gulf of Mexico gets it repriced at international rates, and that means all those parasites in the Midwest who have been making out from the oil glut will be paying $4.50/gallon like us Californians. WAHOO, schadenfreude is a wonderful thing! Hey, and if you cant tell, Im totally horsing around. But here are two serious points from a guy who grew up in the oil industry: (1) Pipelines do spill. Always happens, and the question is just where, when, and how bad. The good news, and my Sierra Club friends can throw tomatoes at me on this, is that pipeline spills are seldom more than localized messes. The XL is gonna make some messes, but it probably isnt going to end life as we know it. (2) I personally oppose XL because it is going to *RAISE* gas prices for American consumers. Im not kidding. Heres why: Right now the Canadians cant get their oil to the international market. Its trapped feeding refineries in the midwest. Trapped oil is always cheaper oil, which is why the Canadians want to get the oil to the Gulf where it can be refined and shipped anywhere. The net effect of the XL is that were gonna suck up some environmental damage just so people in Des Moines can pay more at the pump. Now I can kinda understand, if you have certain political leanings, that screwing over the Greenies might be fun. But Im not sure its worth screwing everyone from Colorado to Ohio just to make some California brie-and-chablis types unhappy. And that was my political-economic rant for the evening. :D
