I can’t believe it’s been a month since we rolled into Adelaide. There haven’t been any dusty corrugated roads, smelly drop toilets or grey nomads. In fact we haven’t had to set up our tent since getting here. We’ve had it quite easy really with some of Ashlyn’s family offering to house us while we are in the city. Once again we got to experience all the things you take for granted when you live in a house in a major city. Just the little things like running water, electricity, phone reception, rubbish collection, internet, television, retail shopping and my personal favourite a lovely hot shower every day. We hadn’t smelt so good in months :P One thing we hadn’t been missing however was the constant in your face election rubbish that goes on every three or so years and there was certainly no escaping it in Adelaide. Unlike our home state of WA it seems South Australia doesn’t have quite so many restrictions in regards to where hopeful pollys can advertise for your vote. I kid you not, every single power poll in Adelaide had someone’s face plastered all over it telling you to put a number one in their box come election day. But enough about that idiocy, there was a reason we had travelled so quickly to Adelaide, We had a wedding to attend and with generous family to look after our car along with relatively cheap flights back home, it was the perfect place to fly back from. Finally after seventeen years in a relationship, which included following love to the other side of the country and back, buying a home together and then having two children, my oldest brother had decided it was time to tie the knot and get married. Better late than never they say, and in a family where weddings don’t come around too often everyone was pretty excited to see their special day finally come around and help them celebrate the big event. It was a lovely day and we wish them many more years of joy and happiness. Another bonus of going home was catching up with friends and family. It was great to see familiar faces again, share a meal and chat about whatever comes to mind. I’m not a person that usually thrives on social interactions, nor am I very good at them, but seeing people other than complete strangers everyday was something I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I would have to say Ashlyn’s favourite part about going home was seeing our little dog Ella again. Unfortunately we had to leave her behind when we left on our great adventure and we often thought about our little furry friend, wondering how she was doing. Seeing her again reassured us that she was doing fine in her new home with my parents and leaving her behind the second time around wasn’t nearly as hard. We still miss her though. But after they hype of the wedding and seeing all our friends and family had worn off, it quickly became evident that almost nothing about the town we had grown up in had changed since we left. I suppose it was silly to think it would, we only left a mere six months prior, but to us those six months had been so crammed full of life it had felt like years! Seeing Geraldton in almost the exact same state as we had left it now made it feel as if we had never left at all, it was quite scary really. Gero no longer felt like home and soon all we could think about was returning to Adelaide to be reunited with our beloved Landy, hitting the road and pitching the tent somewhere out in the wild where time seems to slow down and life is rich and fulfilling. Unfortunately the week since returning to our house on wheels hasn’t been quite as amazing as we thought it would be. We have found a pretty special spot out in the bush at the pointy end of the Yorke Peninsular where people are scarce, the cost line is ruggedly beautiful and the wildlife exceeds expectation. But I’m sad to report the weather hasn’t been the best and both Ashlyn and I have the worst colds we have had in some years. We are just a couple of coughing snotty messes really and have spent the better part of a week just resting in hope we will get better soon. I’m starting to feel my old self now though and I’m sure we will be back on our feet in the next day or two. Once again the world will be our oyster! Ben & Ashlyn
