“I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe.” A man says I can’t breathe 11 times yet the police officer charged with protecting him, kills him instead. Why – because he sold loose cigarettes? The tragic case of #EricGarner is painful, and it makes me angry. It reveals a judicial system, and a police disciplinary system, that is clearly broken. The entire incident was caught on camera, and in my view, the police officer got away with murder. Even former President Bush said that the #Garnerdecision was hard to understand. We need a robust, independent federal investigation into the killing of Eric Garner because there is no accountability anymore. We are all Eric Garner. It is a travesty that 99% of law enforcement officers are good people who do good work, yet their names are being dragged through the mud because of some bad actors. Why should these good people have to pay for a few bad apples? I’m calling for a federal investigation into this case, and I also am strongly in favor of the creation of independent review boards – outside of the police department – to investigate and discipline these bad actors. The old way isn’t working; it’s time to change it.
