I caught a glimpse of a woman on the machine across from me this evening at the gym, placing her face down to her hands. My first thought was that she may be experiencing vertigo or nearly about to faint. But what I heard once I removed my earbuds on my way over to her was much worse. She wasnt fainting, she wasnt experiencing vertigo.. she was being laughed at. I look to my right to see two grown beings muttering the words Why is she even here.. These boys (my guess, around 24 years old) chuckling and making it clear that this was indeed directed at her. Just about half way to her she looks up, we catch eyes. Hers tearful, mine filled with anger. She smiles, I smile back. She gets up, wipes her face and walks over to them with dignity insisting that they teach her how to properly use the machines. The two were clearly taken by surprise but took her up on her proposition. She looked over to me and we shared another smile. Im thankful, this woman clearly had the heart of gold and a brain twice the size of those two boys combined. They never saw her teary eyes. And as much as she wanted to have nothing to do with these two, I hope they were taught a vital life lesson. Half of the struggle for most is simply showing up. Well boys, She was there. She was present. She was taking control of life and her health. Your ignorance, your repugnant behavior is exactly what this world doesnt need. Her courage is exactly what this world needs more of. Build people up. The world could be such a beautiful place if we all do so.
