I commented this on the post about fracking but wanted to post it here so everyone could see it. Aye Maccers. I am a big Greens supporter. Some may call me an ecofreak. But when it comes to fracking, I am in favour of it. HEAR ME OUT. The water contamination that you have heard about was the result of a study by Duke University, Texas. They found that groundwater that was near fracking wells contained higher levels of methane and ethane than normal. HOWEVER, contamination is a strong word. The water is still 100% DRINKABLE AND HARMLESS TO HUMANS. NOT. POISONOUS. The contamination that has been experienced was just in the US. It was due to poor well infrastructure, causing them to leak. It is absolutely possible to be able to learn from the US mistakes and make wells that will not leak. Heres a report of a recent study that found water contamination was due to poorly built wells and not fracking itself: bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-29206704 Secondly, if wells were better built, methane leaks into the atmosphere (which ultimately would contribute to global warming) would be minimised drastically as well. Furthermore, experts have said (Professor of Geosciences Terry Engelder of Penn State Uni, for example) that the tremors that occurred in northwest England as a result of fracking could never be so strong to cause any damage or put people at risk. Mini tremors like them happen all the time and we dont even feel it. The argument that these tremors could be dangerous to us is invalid. A shale gas industry in the UK could generate thousands of jobs, especially in the industrially degenerated northern England, and help with the north-south wealth imbalance. In addition, shale gas releases 60% LESS CARBON DIOXIDE THAN COAL when burned. That is STAGGERING. It is an extraordinarily clean fuel. Now, Im not saying fracking for shale gas is a silver bullet, but use of it instead of coal and oil would seriously reduce our carbon footprint. America experienced this in 2010, in fact. My proposal is not to just invest in shale gas and kick renewables to the side, but to invest in both as part of a low-carbon energy mix, and completely ditch the use of coal and oil. We are far too reliant on coal and oil at the moment, and also absolutely no where near ready to being fully reliant on renewables, so a fuel that will decrease our carbon footprint in the meantime WHILST we develop green energy is extremely ideal. Essentially, shale gas could act as a transition fuel between coal and oil, and renewables. My only concern is the fracking sites in relation to houses, as it could possibly decrease their value. Same with the whole pipes underneath housing. That needs to be sorted out. I did a dissertation on the issue of fracking in the UK so would be happy to give you guys my sources and more facts and figures. Many people are so against fracking because there are so many scare stories on the Internet that are full of misinformation and sometimes flat-out lies (Frack Off are absolutely awful for that). I am determined to erase these misconceptions people have about fracking. The potential benefits far outweigh the negatives in my opinion. Get informed and trust the facts before you trust radical activists who are so often full of shit.
