I condemn the excessive use of force by the Turkish police against demonstrators and journalists. Yesterday’s events add to the list of cases in which the handling of demonstrations in Turkey has raised serious human rights concerns. Misconduct of law enforcement officials poses a direct threat to the rule of law and cannot be tolerated. I therefore call on the Turkish authorities to act upon the recommendations contained in my report of November 2013 (bit.ly/1rwStcg) and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights in order to ensure that handling of demonstrations is carried out in compliance with human rights standards, in particular as concerns the respect for peaceful assembly, freedom of expression and press freedom.
