I copied this from another Nosey page, because we sometimes get a question about buying Nosey: Many of you have asked about buying Nosey to get her out of the situation that she is in. These are some of the reasons why its not something we advocate: -We dont have legal authority to seize Nosey, and we cant force Liebel to sell her. -Liebel uses Nosey to make money, so he has little incentive to sell her. Also, he claims that Nosey is already in a sanctuary with him and that he provides her with the best of care--to sell Nosey to an animal protection group would be a tacit admission that he cant care for her. -Even if Liebel did sell her, we cant stop him from using the money to buy another elephant to exploit. There is every reason to think hed want to continue working with elephants. - In general, its not a good idea to pay bad people not to do bad things. - Purchasing Nosey would set a bad precedent. We could never raise enough money to purchase all the abused and neglected elephants in America. - Liebel could take our money and purchase other animals who would suffer like Nosey has. - Liebel would most likely demand a lot of money for Nosey (perhaps $100,000+). As much as we care for Nosey, that amount of money could be used to help many more animals. - Because African elephants are protected under the Endangered Species Act, it is a complicated process to sell or purchase an elephant. Our hope is that Liebel will one day soon be convinced to retire Nosey to an elephant sanctuary. Thank you all for continuing to be her voice and fighting for her.
