I could cry with frustration. I rang my RSA insurance providers today - knowing in advance that they would come up with a list of reasons why they couldnt pay out for my recent dish-washer fire. So - theres the obvious stuff... my excess of course, fair enough. They will only replace the value of the 8yr old model or similar (non-existent) spec, fair enough - ish. Actually, not fair enough - Ive been paying insurance every year since I first took out the policy, and those policy payments have increased with inflation, so I should be able to expect to replace my damaged appliance with a current model. But heres where the real fun starts. Because Im claiming for fire damage - they will only pay out if there were flames. Smoke isnt enough - and I have to prove there wasnt smoke without fire..! To make a claim, I would need to pay for an engineers report to confirm that there was actually a fire in the dishwasher. Then theres the €500 call-out fee for the fire-brigade. Apparently, depending on a report which will accompany the invoice from the council, they may - or may not - cover the call-out... which begs the question, what on earth is the point of paying out for insurance at all. Flames eh? flaming mad, I say!
