I could not believe my eyes this morning. Bear paws on the chicken - TopicsExpress

I could not believe my eyes this morning. Bear paws on the chicken coop and the walls to the nesting boxes of the coop were torn off. Feathers every where with 1 dead chicken in the coop, 20 missing chickens/chicks, an injured duck gone and a drake. 23 birds in all. Our dog was finally locked up last night because she had surgery and kept seeing her in the am so dirty and concerned of her opening her wound. After 10 minutes of barking we let her lose. We heard her barking and running away and all was quiet for awhile. Never thought that could happen that fast. To think husband went and checked on the noise twice and saw nothing. That is scary. We checked the property for stragglers and the weird thing is we found lots of feathers on the other side of the property. Birds went where they never have before to get away and bear got them? We are seniors trying to start a homestead on a limited budget. Guess expansion of the flock starts next yr. No more money for expansion now. All was going so well. More fencing and electric fencing will be going in place first. The lights for that area was going in this fall. Guess that will have to be the priority and hopefully there is not another visit in the meantime. Not a nice way to greet the day. :-( On the positive side the 3 geese, 2 drakes and momma hen duck and her 17 ducklings are fine and so are the rest of our ducks. Too think the bear thought it was easier to get in a locked up coop then a fenced area with ducks and ducklings that were not locked up.
