I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off Environment Week than President Obama’s welcomed announcement that he will next month issue rules to reduce U.S. carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 and achieve the reductions he promised to the world. They will achieve those reductions through rules allowing wide flexibility to each state to choose their preferred path to reducing ghgs including closing coal fired power plants, switching to gas, establishing a cap and trade market, expanding renewable power generation or incenting improved energy efficiency. This announcement erases our Federal Government’s last poor excuse for inaction in imposing a ghg reduction target for Canada’s oil and gas sector, in particular the oil sands, our nation’s largest and growing source of carbon emissions. I encourage everyone to call or write to the Prime Minister and demand action this week. For the sake of our nation’s reputation. For the sake of our children. For the sake of our planet.
