I created a phrase when we were working on Gun Hill. DOCUMENTARY GRAPHIC NOVEL. Its a phrase that the cinematographer, production designer, costume designer and other crew members worked from. DOCUMENTARY in that this two hour pilot comes from a real place. When I was a kid, I thought pops was the greatest guy in the world. As a teenager, I thought he was the worst. After he passed away, I needed to explore this notion that there is a good side and bad side in all of us. I also went through the DEA Citizens Academy, learned about a real-life case that inspired much of the crime element in this initial episode. GRAPHIC NOVEL because Larenz plays an unlikely hero. A hero with flaws. He is a bad guy trying to find out if he can become a good guy. I first pitched the idea to BET in 2009. I wrote the script in 2010. I shot the thing in 2011. And finally, you get to see what a DOCUMENTARY GRAPHIC NOVEL is on July 2. 9:00 p.m/8:00 p.m. CT Enjoy!
