I defended someone who abused me, in very much the same way that Janay Rice chose to defend her husband today. I stayed because I didnt think I had any other options available to me. I stayed because I thought that every Im sorry meant we were really going to change and turn our relationship around. I stayed because she was just so in love with me, and I stayed because I had started to think I was at fault, that I played a role in the abuse. Abusers are manipulative. They have psychological control long before they hit someone. They erode the self-esteem of the victim to the point that the victim is only a shell of their former self. When physical abuse starts, it is already too late for many victims. So before you start making your assumptions about Janay Rice choosing to stay because her husband makes millions of dollars or some other superficial reason, understand that her story isnt different from any other battered spouse. Our making judgements and criticizing her, the NFL originally only suspending Rice for two games, the courts choosing to simply fine Rice and put him in an intervention program, these are all reasons why women like Janay feel they cannot come forward with their stories. End of rant.
