I delivered a Keynote speech to the population at Northern Illinois University. During the Q & A session, an audience member asked: ‘What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to how people interact with you relative to a visible disability?’ This is not the first time this subject has been brought up. In my travels, I have come across countless people. Among those, I have heard many interesting greetings. These introductions range from, ‘What the heck happened to you? Can you walk? Do you have a driver’s license to operate that thing? How did you ‘earn’ that chair (This one was asked by a well known actor which will remain nameless)? Some consider me a complex person when it comes to a myriad of aspects. During a greeting of a new friend or acquaintance, I could not have a more simple philosophy. I welcome a /hello’, ‘what’s your name’ or all the way to ‘It’s nice to meet you.’ My suggestion is to keep it simple….:-) FEAR NOT!!!!!
