I did a one-on-one facilitation with a lovely man named Jack at Windsor Senior Living. Jack is struggling to communicate. He spends much of his time in silence. I do most of the talking when I visit with Jack, but not this last time. Something I said triggered images for Jack, NOT memories, but imagination. I believe that is significant. Jack was not re-visiting his youth when I facilitated the following poem, he was imagining life as a butterfly. My interaction with Jack reinforces my belief that we still have very little understanding of this disease, and because of our own lack of knowledge, we are not finding ways to tap into the creative expression that lies in wait. If we treat people who have Alzheimers as if they no longer exist, soon, they no longer do. You should have seen Jacks expression when I read his poem back to him. He was there, alive in the moment, celebrating his work of art. He was joyful. He was Jack. Blue Monarch If I were a butterfly Id do as I please, fly through clear skies, land on daisy petals, flutter my wings, pick up the reflection of sunlight. --Jack, a man living with Alzheimers
