I disagree with the sentiment behind this macro (that China *shouldnt* have a larger economy than the United States even though it has about five times the population) and also with Breitbarts spin that Purchasing power parity is somehow less relevant than currency exchange rates when comparing GDP: breitbart/Big-Peace/2014/10/09/IMF-Says-China-World-s-Largest-Economy-Sort-Of Now a more relevant comparison from the viewpoint of human development, rather than geopolitics, is GDP per capita (PPP), which for the US is almost 5 times as great as for China; but another measure of human development, the Gini coefficient, turns out to look worse for the US than I thought: With respect to income, they are nearly the same (just under 0.5), but with respect to wealth, China has just over 0.5 (somewhat lower than most developed countries) while the US has about 0.8 (almost the world average, and the world as a whole has a profoundly unequal distribution of wealth, much more so than most developed countries).
