“I do not need to believe in something in order for it to - TopicsExpress

“I do not need to believe in something in order for it to work!” That has long been a foundational element of my understanding of life — and I credit that core belief for a tremendous amount of what Ive been able to create in my life. Here is one way that shows up for me: I constantly lose faith and belief in almost anything Im building, but because I dont require belief as a prerequisite, I keep moving forward anyway. At CreativeLive, at the halfway point in any project or course, I inevitably lose faith in what were building. Luckily Im surrounded by great producers who keep pushing forward. Ive learned to observe my loss of faith and keep stepping forward anyway. Inevitably I find myself re-engaging at the end. I dont fight it. I recognize and sometime even welcome that familiar lack of belief as part of my unique process. And this “belief isnt required” mindset shows up in a lot of crazy ways. I use all sorts of new age bullshit tools and techniques. I think of myself as a pragmatic realist, but that doesnt keep me from trying things out that I consider nonsense. As a corollary, I have an underlying belief that just because I do believe something, that doesnt mean its true. Another way of putting this all together. In my personal understanding of life, I dont let the lack or existence of belief become the final arbiter of what is possible, or what is true. Ultimately what is most important is my own next step forward — that that step requires only action. And enough forward steps, believed or otherwise, create a tangible reality that is remarkable.
