I do not now, nor have I ever, understood lines. We draw lines; - TopicsExpress

I do not now, nor have I ever, understood lines. We draw lines; we put them in place; we use them to divide. From far above the Earth, they only exist in the minde eye, yet we believe in them so strongly they end up meaning more to us than embracing our neighbors. Ive been quite mistaken in my world view, it seems. For many years Ive thought we would do well to have more unifications and, as the EU bound Europe together, I saw a positive leap forward for humankind.... but people want to draw lines. Some invisible lines have existed hundreds or even thousands of years, and lately it seems that people want to make some lines deeper, darker, and even more divisive. If Scotland votes to secede from the United Kingdom they will, perhaps, be doing a great disservice, but not to the UK or even to themselves. Instead, the greatest disservice may be to humankind. I can understand the importance of independence. As an American, it is what we thrive on. Were trained from the time were young elementary school students to appreciate and celebrate our own. So as I observe the fervor on the news, I understand the sentiment from deep inside my bones. If the situation were different, as in a ruthless, oppressive regime, or a totalitarian dictator who sought out and murdered his opposition, then I would be all in favor of some sort of movement against such a force. Unfortunately, it seems that this free society wants to cleave itself in twain because of what went down hundreds of years ago. Its a similar mentality to when the Serbs and Croats went against one another, though I see little bloodshed coming from this no matter the outcome. When we dwell on history, we are no better than it. Whatever the outcome, this day late and dollar short post wont have much impact, but if we can begin to change a few world views, perhaps humankind can move further in a more welcoming direction. Whether its Mexico, Canada, the US, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, or any country in the EU, the world would benefit a lot if we had a few less lines on the map.
