I do paint historical pictures now and then. Really, I do. Im more of a storyteller than a painter, thats why. However, I dont expect my contemporary paintings to become historical almost right away. Paradoxically, some of them do. I painted this one less than ten years ago. The cafe is now gone because the owner and the landlord disagreed over some figures - twice. As I recall, the first time the landlord raised the rent, the quality of the food dropped sharply (yes: the owner wished to stay profitable, the callous bastard). I have no idea whose avarice played the bigger role the second time around, the landlords or the owners (landlords too have bills to pay, you know). I do remember, though, that a different owner (ran a diner on Lexington), when faced with a similar situation, left a note to his patrons (shut up shop and taped several copies of it to the door) to the effect that the choice had been a) leave, or b) start charging $17 for a burger. A couple of years later they knocked down the five-story building (that had stood there for over a century, picturesque architrave and all) and erected a faceless glass-and-steel insula: a very popular move these days.
