I dont disagree that dialogue is needed around punishment theories, rehabilitation and justice in a new era, but these comments from Simon Jenkins are poorly timed and woefully misjudged. Oscar Pistorious has had his life ruined. Reeva Steenkamp had her life taken away. I dont agree that nothing good comes of imprisoning Pistorious. Imprisonment is brutal, and not withstanding the fact that we need to reform prisons to ensure offenders are rehabilitated and able to re-enter society, a reasonable prison sentence would have shown that no amount of privilege, adoration, success, wealth or respect entitles one to treat other people in this way. Its all the more pertinent given the debacle over Ched Evans. Rape, murder of women etc - its fair for women the world over to expect justice to be delivered for women as well as men. Pistorious and Evans do have an opportunity to be rehabilitated and the opportunity to live a life. Their victims do not have that opportunity in the same way.
