BUT, Im exercising a little self-care today with a little self congratulations. This year I did three years of academic work in 1.5 in a discipline people told me Id be out of my depth in. I not only signed a major book contract but got a book advance. I spent a year in policy in California where I made some of the best friends of my life. I hit everything from the NY Times to Dan Rather. And Im headed to Microsoft to be paid to write something smart. I work hard and all the detractors can say is that I *shouldnt* do it; not that Im not doing it. If even Jesus couldnt stop them from talking, reducing the haters to hating on the inevitability of my hard work is the next best thing to shutting them up. Not bad for a brown squat girl from NC. Ante up. Next stops -- catch me at Marthas Vineyard, Barnard or Harvard this summer. Or, if I can find one, at honky tonk or fish fry. Im a complicated woman.
