FINANCIAL packages to workers leaving South Tyneside Council amounted to £2.6m last year, new figures reveal. It also emerged that two unnamed employees shared £368,000 in pay-offs in 2013/14 and there are currently 18 senior council officers being paid a total of £1.86m in salaries and pensions, according to a report presented to a recent meeting of the council’s General Purposes Committee. The leader of the opposition on South Tyneside Council, Coun George Elsom, labelled the salary levels and pay-offs “totally excessive”, particularly while frontline council staff are being laid off and having their pay frozen. Nearly 3 Million of OUR money is pretty damning fact.
