I dont know if you saw the One Show last night, but they picked up the story about the trainee teacher who was sacked for having tattoos (dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2802935/teaching-assistant-sent-away-catholic-school-arms-neck-covered-tattoos.html). I cant believe such prejudice still exists - nor the tirade of anti-tattoo comments on the One Show pages. Suggesting someone with tattoos cant be a lawyer, a teacher or a professional is as bad as saying Black people arent professional, a Muslim should only teach in a Muslim school or women cant be engineers - it is colourist and stereotyping, plain and simple. True, getting a tattoo is voluntary decision, unlike ones skin-colour or nationality - however making judgements on someone merely by the colour of their skin (whether born with it that colour, or added afterwards) is still a shallow and offensive form of prejudice. You may not like the art on my Skin, but how is it fair to say I should be barred forever from a profession, just because of one decision I made many years ago? My tattoos are a declaration of my ideals and my sense of beauty - they show that I am prepared to stand up for what I believe in - to suffer for it, and to wear it proudly. They show that I care deeply about myself, and will spend both time and money pursuing the very best that I can (including finding, and working closely with, an award winning artist). They show that I have incredible patience - and that I am able to work closely with an artist to express a shared vision. My tattoos show that I place beauty, perfection and self expression above everything else in my life.
