I dont know the exact date, but the first day of school seems as good as any to mark the occasion. I moved to Austin and began eighth grade at Porter Middle School in August 1984, thirty years ago. I also met Dan Dove at that time; we are close friends to this date. Austin was where my great-grandparents, Winnie and Weldon, lived. They lived on 30 1/2 Street (I believe) near where the Half-Price Books on Guadalupe used to be. I loved them and their house and Austin by association. They had cases of Fresca on their back porch and drank the bubbly nectar constantly. Id been coming here all my life for visits to them. Austin has always felt like home. Apart from coming to Austin and meeting Dan, I have nothing else good to say about the eighth grade, junior high, or the age of thirteen, all of which I am overjoyed to see in my rear view mirror at an ever-increasing distance.
