I dont know whats the right answer here. I truly dont. For people of Christian faith - I think Ecclesiastes 7:17 is perhaps the most direct guidance... But I also cannot help but see this as politically manipulative... it reminds me in part of the scene in Soylent Green when Edward G. Robinson decides to die. In that movie, there is this really intense scene where Robinson and Heston are discussing their relationship and then Robinson decides hes going to go to the processing center to commit suicide and be turned into crackers. So this scene is super intense, and its not obvious why - because its not particularly dramatic but for the way Heston is looking at Robinson. What people didnt know, until long after Robinsons death, and shortly before Hestons, was that Robinson had told Heston that he was in fact dying of bladder cancer and probably had only a few weeks left. He died actually about a week after that revelation. Anyways in the film, the next scene, generally referred to as the Euthanasia Poetica, Robinson is looking at pictures of the World as it was before the dystopia. And Robinson is basically talking a lot like Ms. Maynard... and Heston is crying... I mean seriously crying... and Robinson can hardly talk. Its often cited as being one of the most bizarre scenes in cinema and one of the most compelling performances of either actor. ... probably in large measure because no one was acting (as we found out decades later). ... again, I dont know what the right answer is here... but it strikes me as being disturbing on a bunch of levels. I cant help but feel manipulated on one level... and on another... its difficult not to have empathy. I dont know why this woman has chosen to make this part of her life public... but, unfortunately, I dont think shes ever going to find what shes looking for. In the end, I dont think its up to us... its not like the movies.
