I dont know where to begin, but going to get a little sappy on you. I only marched one year with the Freelancers, 1984. The family heritage started with my cousin, Timothy Van Keuren. I remember watching in awe the VHS tapes of the Freelancers and couldnt believe that Id ever be able to be a part of such a great thing. Well, I tried out and made it! I still remember the excitement of the rehearsals, and the performances. I never wouldve believed you could rehearse for 12 hours a day in the summer heat! The Freelancers taught me hard work and how to be part of something bigger than yourself. I remember the flawless (at least in my mind) walk-through before finals in Atlanta. I remember breakfast in Denver, a 1/2 a bagel and a slice of bacon (send money mom! :-). I remember EARLY one morning after a particularly grueling day before, sleep walking, trying to wake up everyone thinking that we had overslept! (yea that one was embarrassing!) All in all, marching with the Freelancers was one of those seminal moments in my life that helped to shape me in ways I could not imagine at the time. After tour in 84, life and the Navy were calling and my Drum Corps career was over. I went to my first show a few years ago in Pasco, WA, Drums along the Columbia, and the flood of memories actually brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Freelancers.
