I dont mean this negatively, just an observation on perception: Im speaking tomorrow in Minneapolis for 1600+ real estate professionals. If not for the awesome Dan Breault and Re/MAX, I would not have addressed a single agent in my hometown of Indianapolis. Times Ive spoken for the real estate agency (FC Tucker) that Ive used three times for over seven figures in sales for them: zero. Ive spoken for several pharmaceutical companies around the world. Times Ive spoken for Lilly, based in Indianapolis: zero. Ive spoken five times for BMW Nordic and addressed their dealer principals in Stockholm and met every one from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and more. I did keynotes for (and met) every dealer principal in the UK. Ive bought 14 cars over 30 years from Dreyer & Reinbold BMW in Indy. Ive never been extended an invitation to meet Dennis Reinbold, or spoken for BMW US. The original edition of Create Distinction was named by 30 major newspapers -- Miami Herald, Sacramento Bee, New Orleans Times-Picayune -- as one of the Ten Best Business Books of the Year. Neither the Indianapolis Star nor Indianapolis Business Journal would review it...because it came from a local author. Im the highest rated speaker in this history of Ciscos most important global meeting featuring the worlds top thought leaders. (Only one in history to get a perfect rating from every audience member.) McAfees three keynotes were George W. Bush, Eva Longoria, and me. Exact Target/Salesforce in Indianapolis has never returned our calls or emails about their meetings. Again, I truly do NOT mean this as sour grapes -- I often think Im the most fortunate guy in the world. And, good grief, we are KILLING it right now in the global marketplace! (Which is such an amazing honor for which Im grateful.) The questions are: 1) Are you overlooking someone in your own backyard? Maybe I have -- and I think these organizations are, too. 2) If you have to go elsewhere for a speaker, author, employee, etc., because you perceive a local to be less appealing -- what does that say about you? I mean...YOU are there, arent you? 3) Do you perceive someone from another city, company, university, generation, or other standard as superior or more accomplished? What about not as smart or credentialed if they have an accent or are from a specific part of the country or the world? Why? Just a thought...
