I dont mean to be a downer or come across as too Grinchy (not actually a word Im sure), but I think its important to survey ourselves inwardly this time of year. Many of us tend to get hung up on the religious aspect of the Christmas holiday, allowing ourselves to become easily offended over the beliefs and chosen salutations of others, while completely forgetting to hold ourselves morally accountable. Perhaps the focus should be increasingly less on what folks say and believe and increasingly more on what people actually DO to better the lives of others (including animals, naturally). I am reminded of a child (a former student) who recently lost his young mother to cancer and of another local mother who recently lost her child to a senseless tragedy. Can you imagine the crushing sadness with which they are grappling? I am also reminded of those in the southern part of my state who are experiencing crippling grief over the loss of their loved ones and homes during yesterdays tornadoes (two days before Christmas mind you). There are also countless individuals (including our own friends, relatives, and coworkers) who are dealing with severe sadness and stress over such personal misfortunes as divorce, job loss and isolating loneliness and depression. And lets certainly not discount the thousands upon thousands of homeless, abandoned or neglected pets in each state who are huddled somewhere (whether it be a lonely shelter cage or at the end of a cold, callous chain) longing for a warm bed. At this point, I seriously doubt any of them care how you greet them, whether it be Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, or my personal favorite, Peace, Love and Paw Prints. Just be mindful and reach out to somebody who would greatly benefit from your thoughtfulness and compassion. That, regardless of ones Biblical beliefs or lack thereof, is how you keep Christ in Christmas. At least thats what I think.
