I dont normally follow CNN (Constantly Negative News, as its referred to in some circles), but found this article very interesting. Im moving in the direction of being a reformed conformist (grew up being a pleaser, and mostly always doing the right thing...deep rooted programming there), but as a straight A student (like my 7th grade daughter) in junior high school, started a movement (which I didnt see through, as it wasnt pleasing to authority) attempting to require school to coordinate with teachers of each subject to only be allowed to assign homework on certain nights..so we wouldnt end up with homework in all six subjects on some nights...when we maybe had extra-curricular sports, band or choir practice, or...heaven forbid, maybe some recreational activity like a bike ride or fun with friends before dinner!!! I was SUPER PASSIONATE about fairness, and always felt kids should be able to have some after school BALANCE in life for play time! My high achieving daughter usually does homework for at LEAST a couple of hours per night, but until recently couldnt get an A in Physical Education because she couldnt run the mile in under 9 minutes...or 10, or whatever it was! Dont get me wrong, I LOVE her school and its staff, but the CULTURE of nightly homework still bugs me like crazy because LIFE BALANCE is something Ive been super challenged to achieve (I rarely find or MAKE the time to PLAY!); and I realize a big part of that challenge comes from the programming of the necessity for hard work rather than SMART work being the key to success. I may be mistaken, but I believe its time for a NEW PARADIGM!! What about your thoughts? Im on a new mission to achieve the mindset of MAKE WORK PLAY! Of course, it seems to me a pre-requisite would be to make ones living doing something about which they are passionate...right?
