I dont often have a public social comment, but this needs to be shared. There is a lot of hoohah after the death of two amazing horses today. But Im not sharing this because they died. Im sharing it because they lived. These majestic creatures have been forging connections with humans for hundreds of years. They are smart, intelligent animals that get scared, feel pain, feel stress and feel happiness just as we do. While people were out getting drunk today at the Melbourne cup this guy was working. And working hard. He ran his heart out. Literally. While many people would have been drinking and carrying on this young man was lead back to his stall, given a little water and de-saddled. It was not long after that his heart stopped working. Just imagine for a moment how much stress your body would have to be under for your heart to literally stop working, and for your body to crumble under your own weight. Its almost U fathomable. I seriously disagree with horse racing, and many will say thats ironic because you have worked at the races, but my attitudes remained the same. For someone like me who has ridden the back of a galloping horse down a beach, the thunder of hooves underneath me, the connection with animal forged and not a whip in sight - there is nothing more incredible than feeling the horse live and breathe under you. Knowing when to let it slow and rest without saying a word; something this young man wont be able to do again. So rest in peace the two men who fell today, the two who will probably fall tomorrow and to the many that have fallen without notice off the track. I thank you for putting up with the torment and for not bucking your rider off sooner as that probably would have met you with a worse fate. You are magnificent in so many ways and soon we as a society will be able to recognise that you are not a social sport, but a species worth saving.
