I dont often rant on facebook. But something is bothering me. I keep seeing arguments pop up in the last week or so about how christians should not support the belief in Santa Clause... or, Ive even been told that I should be ashamed of myself for not resenting ANY Christmas symbolism that is not a nativity or passage of scripture. I will first say that I very firmly believe Christ should be at the immediate forefront of our Holiday celebrations, as we would not even have a reason to celebrate without Him, and my husband and I have always made that our first priority at this time of the year. Next, I will say that though Christ commands us to cast aside anything that may hinder our worship or create a stumbling block for others, He also says that our worship need not be legalistic and condescending to our fellow believers. In fact, He specifically calls out people who express their faith in flashy, critical, legalistic ways, and insists that He cares more about the heart of His children than anything else. If you really have nothing better to do at this time of year that put others down because their kids waited in line to sit on Santas lap, or because they choose not to be legalistic about their Christmas celebrations, youve completely missed the point. Not only are you poorly representing your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, you are further confirming to the nonbelievers of the world that Christianity is nothing but a bunch of rules and regulations designed to suck the fun out of life. Point: More people choose to walk away from Christianity (or not believe at all) because of the way Christians treat each other and the amount of time we spend harping on these tiny things that really dont make a difference in the way of eternity. You are adding to the noise and actually pulling attention away from Christ. Ive yet to hear of someone who walked away from the faith because of their belief in Santa Clause. I have, however, heard dozens of people express their disdain for the church because of their interactions with jurisdictional Christians. Grow up.
