I dont often share videos, but recently, especially after the situation in Iraq in which approximately 150 women were executed; I have been receiving a lot of questions from friends in regards to Islamic States and the treatment of women. Im not sure if thats due to politics and international politics being a part of my university studies or an insight into the religion I may offer my self. However, this video, featuring Reza Aslan as a guest on CNN, albeit being quite old is a great insight into the questions being asked. It is also a better explanation than I could possibly offer. The one thing I stress for those curious is to remember, the term Islamic countries can not be used. It is a fallacious argument to label all Islamic countries and group them with the actions and intentions of the most extreme. The actions you see on your tv are of very violent groups, that are not representative of the majority of those who follow Islam. The actions are committed as political statements, with the use of the religion as their cover. The people are violent, and their are many more factors to consider than the religion alone that may lead to radicalism. Such as, education, poverty and the influence of those raising them that may lack these factors as well. The Quran does not promote the killing of apostates, it seemingly renounces it. Lastly, Id also like to address a pet peeve of mine, to the individuals that constantly say the world is going to shit, we live in an era that is considered the most peaceful in recorded history. A majority of humankind has learnt to follow the rule of law, and we as humans may have violent impulses, but just as much, we show have traits to suppress violence like empathy, care, restraint, and reason. You can not say here is a violent event, the world is becoming more violent that is a mathematical error.
