I dont post on hear a lot but had an experience yesterday I need to share. Ill warn you now, this will be a long post. I was headed home from work yesterday, in my typical hurry for no real reason. Decided to stop and fill my tank with gas because of rumors of price increases. Pulled into Valero and walked inside to prepay for $20 since I already had over a quarter tank. Of course there were three people already at the register, took my place in line behind a man who needed a bath and to find a Laundromat. When it got to be his turn at the register he placed his right hip up against the counter and turned his pants pocket inside out. A handful of pennies and nickels landed on the counter. The clerk asked, what can I get you? He said a single word. Gas. I let out a sigh and rolled my eyes as she counted his change, Two dollars and ninety three cents she said. He turned and walked out the door. I waited, not so patiently, but quietly as she sorted the change and put in the register drawer. Twenty on six I said and handed her the bill when it was my turn. As I walked toward my car I heard a click,...click coming from an over twenty year old beat up mini-van. As I got to my car and began putting the gas in I heard it again. I turned to look and realized it was the man that had been ahead of me in line. I saw him pick up a small hammer from the dash as he opened the door. As he swung his legs out I realized both had been amputated, seeing the metal rods that took place of his lower legs, one just above and one just below his knees. How had I not seen that when I was right behind him, I thought. He got out of the mini-van walked around and opened the hood. He tapped lightly on the battery connections with the tiny hammer, walked back and tried it again. The now familiar click...click was the only sound the vehicle made. Do you need a hand I asked as I was pulling the gas nozzle from my car. Nah, this always works was his only reply. As I got into my car to drive home, I was humbled beyond belief. I prayed to be reminded of this every time I think Im having a bad day. No matter what I go through or how bad things seem, someone is going through worse. I need to count my God given blessings more often. My guess is that we all do.
