I dont usually post #tbt pics but today Im feeling nostalgic. I want to warn you that these pics arent funny or even fun to look at... but its time I shared them. Its 4th of July weekend and I plan (like lots of you) to soak up some sun, drink some beverages and eat some bbq. One year ago I couldnt do any of those things. Last April I went to the doctor for a strange looking mole. As most of you know, it was cancer. In May I had the first of a series of operations/procedures to remove melanoma from my leg. In addition to a chunk of my calf, I lost 14 lymph nodes (and gained almost 50lbs.) In December I was finally released from weekly visits to wound care. If you know me then you know that I have tanned since I was a teen. I dont really burn and Im not fair-skinned so I never thought I had to worry about skin cancer. I was wrong. Lots of you, my friends, still tan. I cant stop you. I can, however, show you the risks. Take a good hard look at the pictures attached to this post. Is it worth it? Im happy to say that I will be out in the sunshine with you this 4th of July...but I will be wearing sunscreen. Please, wear some too. P.S. I passed the one year mark cancer-free and I came out stronger than before. I owe a huge debt to Shannon Hesse McNew, Charity Worley and Tammy Portwood Keesey. (I dont know how I earned your friendship but now that I know how good all three of you are with open wounds and sharp objects, I will be sure not to piss you off!!!)
