I dont usually write about an evening out. Usually Im too tired when I arrive home, and by the next day the moment has passed. This evening I attended Ian MacGowans first solo concert. I like solo music. It provides an opportunity to concentrate on one acoustic sound source and its relation to the environment. I like Ians solo playing as it exemplifies two characteristics that I think are virtues in music making: tone and form. Ians trumpet sound is rounded and colourful, the progression over the 30 minute performance was controled, articulate, varied but remained relevant to the overall structure.
