I don’t often rant these days but I’m about to. For many years the town of Harpenden in Herts has staged in July an event called ‘Classics On The Common’. People with interesting stuff could roll up, pay a few quid to the Round Table and park their car or bike on the common for purposes of meeting like minded people and showing off their cars and bikes. Then on contacting a friend recently, I discovered that the event is now being regulated by the local council and the result is that all entries have to be pre-booked, with no refunds. I have just sent the organisors the E-mail below. I think they’ll understand my feelings..... Dear Sir/Madam. I heard at the weekend that you now expect all motorcycles at your event now have to pay in advance and there will be no access on the day. This is crass commercialisation. You know why you are doing it—so if the weather is bad—you still make money. Personally speaking—you can stick your pre-booking up your collective kazoos. The spirit of the event is being sacrificed on the excuse of safety—even though you and I both know the reason is money. You won’t be getting any of mine—Bluntly, I hope your event fails. You’ve killed it in spirit, so it no longer is relevant. Regards Andy Jones Dunstable.
