I drove by the exit to the Darlington Speedway this afternoon - TopicsExpress

I drove by the exit to the Darlington Speedway this afternoon leaving Columbia. All know Im not a big NASCAR fan but I do love tradition & especially Virginia & southern history & culture. Thinking about Darlington, I was quickly reminded that this, Darlington, SC, is where stock car racing got its start (along with Daytona Beach). Back in the 60s, the surnames of the driving greats were: Yarborough, Petty, Allison, Earnhardt, Pearson. There were no races held at tracks outside of the old Confederacy. Nowadays, the drivers surnames are: Keselowski, Allmendinger, Logano, LaBonte, Nemechek, et al. Furthermore, the bulk of the race venues are out west or in enemy territory (Yankees). There is no chance with those last names any of their forebears wore the Gray & fought for the Confederacy. Certainly, if the fan base has grown beyond the south, I dont blame NASCAR or drivers or promoters for exploiting it, but I miss the tradition of stock car racing being pretty much a rebel thing. Rant over............
