I dunno, maybe its just me, but Id basically have to wish you dead before Id de-friend you, which is why Ive never de-friended anyone because theres nobody I hate that much. Even if Ive hated some of the crap theyve pulled, or said, or whatever (and some of it has been terrible), it stops short of any hatred so deep of they as people that would make me willing to basically communicate to them: you are of no use to me. I have no need to maintain even the most low-effort passive superficial connection to anything about you ever again; moreover, Im willing to let you know that, but not directly, because youre not even worth that. The irony is that I have a sneaking suspicion that some of the very people whove de-friended me have done so because they think Im negative, or harsh or improper.
