I emailed our genealogist about the DNA testing questions and here is her response: It is true we have no descendants from Matthew who have had their DNA tested. From our FAQ: 1 – Why should I participate if I already know my line of descent? This is not just a study for you, we NEED to have those with a documented paper trail participate in order to form the research pool by which we can establish the markers for our Griswold immigrants. It would help those who cannot determine their lineage by narrowing them down to the correct immigrant and ultimately, prove/disprove the best theory to date as laid forth in The Greswold Family: 12 Generations in England, which purports that Michael is a fourth cousin, 14 generations removed from Edward/Matthew. Since only males who still carry the GRISWOLD surname are the only ones that can test for this project it significantly lowers our pool of eligible respondents. Since there are fewer Matthew male descendants then either Edward or Michael it is possible that we may never have a descendant that will be able to test leaving future generations without use of this resource. FTDNA stands for “Family Tree DNA” which is the testing group that the Griswold Family DNA study is using. The following link takes an individual right to the Griswold Family DNA 37 marker test: https://familytreedna/order-now.aspx?ty=121&Group=Griswold&code=#SelectAProduct To be sure it is not inexpensive at $149 but I have had females kick in and help pay for their male father, brother, etc. test since ultimately it helps them as well (they prove their ancestry to a male, which has done the DNA test)
