I enjoyed NYCC and its definitely massive, but I think the comic sites should do more digging into how attendance numbers are recorded. Some shows count a 4 day badge as one attendee, others count that as 4, which definitely alters the numbers. Some shows count tickets sold/freebies given out (whether or not they were redeemed), others count turnstile (which means leaving and coming back could count as 2). Some shows even count staff and vendors to help pump up their numbers. With so many different metrics/tricks being used its very difficult to get a proper attendance comparison. I dont have a horse in this race, I just think the reporting is taking the attendance numbers coming from these shows at face value. I suspect NYCCs numbers could be the most accurate given that the badges have a microchip in them and are scanned as you leave and enter, but Im not sure if their 4 day badge is counted as 4 people or if you left for lunch and came back if that counted as 2. If ComicsAlliance or Comic Book Resources figured out attendance numbers with a consistent methodology, thatd be pretty sweet (and be real journalism, not PR spin). Interview the organizers of these shows and let them know youre asking for numbers based on a specific criteria or they wont be reported. Yes, they could lie. People can fabricate numbers. There is some trust involved but at least youd be asking for the same methodology across the board.
