I experienced nearly the same sort of ridiculous treatment about a year ago. I was pulled over for a back tail light I was not aware was out, and was being very cooperative when I was made to get out of my car, touch my nose, walk in a straight line, put my hands on top of my head etc because the officer smelled booze on me I had nothing to drink. This was all done right in front of my church, where members of the youth group I had been the worship leader for were left watching and wondering if I had involved myself in some sort of illegal or suspicious activity, what with all the spinning lights, commotion etc. I was calm and fairly polite until the NEEDLESS embarrassment I was now suffering in front of the youth I had spent 2 years mentoring began to outrage me. My temperament must have began to shift as I struggled to conceal my frustration, because when I start pressing the officer about whether all of this treatment was really necessary, and whether or not he was placing me under arrest, he gave me my I.D back and let me go. I believe the vast majority of cops are just decent men trying to make a living and get by, but there are utter fools in all line of work sadly some cops take their power complex way too far, its not American.
