I feel I need to remind a few people in Albuquerque of a few things... 1)Peaceful protest: (n) A nonviolent expression or declaration of objection, disapproval, or dissent, often in opposition to something a person is powerless to prevent or avoid. (There was nothing peaceful about yesterday!) 2)Police officers enforce the law, investigate crimes, preserve evidence, write reports for government prosecutors, apprehend fugitives, and testify in court. 3)Mental illness: Mental illness or mental disorder is a condition that affects thoughts, feelings or behaviors of someone who is strong enough to make social integration problematic, or cause personal suffering. I know firsthand that there is a lack of education in dealing with the mentally ill. While the loss of James Boyd should stir the hearts of all of us. He was a military vet and yet no one is mourning the loss of his life, but have made it into a circus. The headlines refer to him as homeless and mentally ill. Before we go crazy about how the police tried to enforce the law, ask yourself how do we treat our mentally ill? How do we care for the homeless? Who is willing to start a local taskforce with me to look at how we can help the mentally ill in our community and change the healthcare industrys approach to the mentally ill and the many patients effected?
