I feel I stand in a desert with my hands outstretched, and you are raining down upon me. Patricia Highsmith Crime writer Patricia Highsmith (born January 19, 1929) rocketed to fame when her first novel, Strangers on a Train, was adapted by Alfred Hitchcock. The year after that movie was released, she published The Price of Salt under a pseudonym. It was one of the first novels in which a lesbian relationship was given a happy ending, and Highsmith claimed that it sold over a million copies.
